Strange Light Cafe, Press Release

October 2010

One in four American's will suffer from mental illness during their lifetime. Vincent Van Gogh, Beethoven, Eugene O'Neill, John Keats, Tolstoy, Sylvia Plath, Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway and Robert Schumann all had it. Yet writer/artist Vincent Blackwood was afraid to admit that he had clinical depression since there is a stigma attached to it. People, like life, can be hard.

He longed for a place were artists with mental illness could go, sit down and not be judged -- a bohemian cafe were Vincent Van Gogh and Sylvia Plath drink coffee and dream on paper. Vincent Blackwood’s artist's cafe of the mind is now open on the web. Painters, writers, musicians, poets and dreamers -- welcome.

The Strange Light Cafe: the Virtual Stage for Artists with Mental Illness. Fighting the stigma associated with mental illness and giving the artist a place to present themselves online.
